about the designer
We throw the term “eco chic” around a lot lately, but we’d guess that the extent of its popularity would not be as widespread if Katharine Hamnett had not been around. The true pioneer for environmentally friendly and ethically responsible clothing, Katharine Hamnett drew from her wildly successful fashions in the ‘80s to campaign for positive change through slogan T-shirts, with the hopes of being copied to thoroughly spread her credo. And clearly, she has been mimicked to everyone’s benefit.
From her initial “Clean up or die” collection in 1989 to the re-launch of Katharine E Hamnett, the designer has continued to push the demand for organic cotton clothing that is made in accordance with fair labor practices. The current collection’s re-issued ‘80s slogan tees have throwback appeal, inspired messages, and remind us that standout fashion can—and should—be as green as humanely possible.
